Another Beautiful Reason to Be Thankful

This Thanksgiving, we celebrated the addition of a new baby to the family. My brother & sister-in-law's newest, Baby Zoe Diana, was born one week before Thanksgiving. We brought the feast to their house this year so we could all be together & it was a wonderful day.

Of course I had to document the birth of my niece, this monumental occasion, with cookies. I was all ready to make some more onesies and baby bonnets, like the cookies I made for her baby shower. I thought the pastel baby colors would look a little out of place with the Thanksgiving dessert spread, but I also thought that no one in my family would sweat it, since we are all so happy to welcome the little one. Then I got an inspiration from Cookie Artisan's latest photo on Flickr. It also made me think of Sweet Sugarbelle's owls & ghosts popping out of the pumpkins from her Halloween collection. Thank you both for such amazing cookie inspirations!! So I switched gears and had a new plan to incorporate the baby cookies with the rest of the Thanksgiving cookies!

{By the way, if you missed my last post, you can see all of my Thanksgiving cookies here!}

I started by making a few Sugar & Spice cookies with a large candy corn cookie cutter. Once they were all cooled, using a toothpick I traced a small circle cookie cutter for the face.

Experimenting With Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

Well, this was an experiment. My friend's children have a gluten-free diet restrictions, so we got together to experiment with sugar cookies for her son's 2nd birthday. We started out on the right track, went awry somewhere in the middle, and then were definitely saved by good old royal icing.

Not too bad, when all was said and done, right?

Owl Birthday Cake and Cupcakes with Sugar Cookie Toppers

Look whoo it is! Another adorable owl!

These desserts were made for a little girl's first birthday party. The design came from the party invitation!

Here's a link to 1st Wishes, where you can buy the adorable Look Whoo's Turning 1 party supplies.

The cake is Vanilla Butter Cake with Chocolate Buttercream filling, and both Vanilla & Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

It's hard to see the size of the cake in the photo- this is a half sheet cake.

She is almost too cute to eat! (Almost.)

The cupcakes are Vanilla Butter Cake with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting (tinted pink) and are topped with a Sugar Cookie decorated with Royal Icing.

Yum! So many sweets!

Owl Cookies and Costume

It was a very Happy Owl-oween for my family this year!

My niece is loving all things owls and all things blue right now. So when it came time to pick out her Halloween costume this year, she actually asked for an owl costume! I was with my brother and sister-in-law when they asked her what she wanted to be for Halloween, on a whim, not really thinking she would know what it meant at her age (21 months). Well, she always surprises us! It didn't take long to find an adorable (& affordable!) DIY template online. Of course it was pink, but she made it quite clear that she wanted a "Blue one!

I first found the costume template on this adorable blog purely devoted to owls, Cute Hoots. Wanna know where you can find all the newest owl decor, owl clothing, owl baking ideas and owl crafting ideas? Look no further. If you love owls, this blog is the place to be. But back to the costume-- the DIY tutorial was originally posted on Pure Joy Events. The directions & template were beyond easy to follow and it came out soooo adorable! Thank you to both blogs for the perfect costume!

Of course, I made cookies to match the costume. I had to! Are you surprised?

The owl shape comes from a snowman cookie cutter-- I just trimmed off part of his top hat!

Fall Plaid Cookies

This week I made two gift platters, a Thank You platter & a Get Well platter. I went with a fall theme for both, using sugar & spice cookies in the shape of leaves, acorns, and pumpkin. I wanted to add some cookies that had both messages on them, and immediately thought of Cookie Crazie's plaid designs as a fun way to tie in the fall colors from the leaves, acorns, and pumpkins. She does plaid details, stitching, and patchwork like no other! So I gave it a try. Not exactly my best work, but once all the details were in place, I was happy with the results!

Clearance Cookie Cutters on Frugal Friday

A fun Frugal Friday tip for my fellow bakers and bloggers. Hurry up...get to the craft stores to pick up some Halloween & Fall cookie cutters now, while they are on crazy clearance sales!

I got a bucket of Halloween Cookie Cutters at Michael's yesterday. They were at the bottom of a small but packed shelf full of Halloween crafting and costume leftovers. Just days after Halloween, the entire store is already decked out in Christmas crafting and decorating supplies. (Should I really have been surprised by now? Stores around here have been doing this before Halloween for years now. Remember when the holiday season started after Thanksgiving? Not anymore.) Anyway, I was a happy girl, because all the Fall & Halloween stuff was 75% off!

This entire set was a whopping $2.49!!!!

New York Rangers Hockey!

Happy Birthday to my Brother-in-law-to-be!

My big sister called in a cookie favor for her fiance's birthday this year. He is a die hard Ranger fan, and with his birthday falling near the beginning of hockey season, Ranger-themed gifts just can't go wrong!
